Webcomics

n my search for more information about creating webcomics I ran across a book in the local library by author/comic Scott McCloud.

The book is called "Making Comics," and is essentially a comic book about making a comic book. It's quite ingenious actually and filled with useful information.

I checked out his website today and found some other pretty interesting things on it.  I knew that I had heard his name before, but my mind couldn't figure out from where.  It dawned on me when I saw his site and his mention of the Google Chrome comic to describe the new web browser.  He is the artist of that infamous comic!

The Google Chrome comic was meant to be uploaded when the web browser was officially released, but there was a mix up at the Google "e-mail room."  Copies of the comic were sent a couple days before the browser was actually due to be released, so for a couple of days the comic was a big draw, as you can imagine, with people flocking to get a sneak peek of the soon to be released new Google product.  Imagine my surprise, when I pick up his book a couple weeks later by coincidence!

While I'm talking about Google, by the way, Chrome is an excellent browser.  I love the minimalistic feel of the GUI and the speed of the pages.  I also discovered Google's 411 telephone system last week (1-800-GOOG-411) and was amazed!  I wonder what made a web company branch into the phone lines...shades of the future maybe?!?

Another New Layout

o after a fairly long time with no updates I have three in two days!

This one is showing off a new layout!  I had been thinking about one for a while now and finally got around to it today.  I'm also trying to do some things to jazz up the site a little bit, such as adding the larger and colored letter to the beginning of each post.  It sort of gives it that little extra design, which I think looks really nice.

I have to tweak this layout a bit more, but it's definitely getting there!

Stick Gymnast

his little guy is just way too much fun not to play with, so here are some more updated stick gymnast renders:
Stickman Pommel Horse
Stickman Blurred Pommel HorseThis last one I attempted to add a motion blur to and I think it came out pretty well.  It's the first time I had done this before, so was a bit of an experiment.  I sort of wanted just his legs to blur, but it ended up moving everything.  I'm thinking this could have been avoided with a clever position of the bezier curve that I used, but I didn't want to get too involved in it.  Hope you enjoy it!

Long time update

o after being reminded this weekend that I haven't updated my blog in a while I decided to go ahead and post a quick update. ;-)

The house project is nearly completed.  The next step is just to make a walk through animation.  I decided not to add any furniture just in the interest of time and my patience with the project.  The materials certainly aren't perfect, but I think that it gives an accurate description of the layout of the house, which was the purpose from the beginning.  Look for an update in the next couple of weeks with a final animation.

Next, after reading an article in the local paper this weekend about Argon Zark, the online webcomic, I discovered that the creator grew up about ten minutes from my place.  This is more inspiring than I thought actually, so it reminded me of a webcomic I had seen made with Blender not too long ago.  This comic is Us the Robots, made by a kid (I say kid because he is only 19, which is also inspiring) named Sam entirely in Blender.  The comic itself is very well done and the artwork is excellent.  There are some very funny "episodes," so I encourage you to check it out!

All this webcomic talk got me thinking about what it would take to actually make one and I set out to see what I could do, or at least give it a try.  In my searching I found a nice little model and rig by a Blender Artist named FreakyDude of a basic stick figure.  He is fully rigged and amazingly posable.  I haven't played with him for very long, but he is really good fun to play with!  After watching some repeat olympic gymnastics last night I did a quick render:

Look for more little scenes with this guy, he is fun!
